Johari Window is the twelfth episode of the second season of FRINGE. It first aired on 14 January, 2010. Following an unexplained attack by disfigured humans, the team visits a small town in upstate New York to follow leads surrounding the bizarre case. Certain that these disfigured people have managed to hide themselves for a while, and that they will do just about anything to keep it that way, the investigation takes turns to Walter's past.

Quotes

  • "A friend of mine once wrote that - sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - (Walter, to Astrid about the moth converting to a butterfly, and implying he is friends with science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke)

Trivia

General

  • The Observer can be seen standing in the background of the crowd of people outside the Edina Town Hall, as they are being addressed by Sheriff Velchik.
  • A Johari Window is a cognitive psychological tool used to help people better understand their relationships and interpersonal communication skills... helping you, and those around you, better see who you really are.

Production Notes

  • The initially advertised title, Edina City Limits, was changed during the first week of January, 2010, less than two weeks before airing.

Continuity Errors

  • Walter incorrectly cites that Harkness is a library at the law school. The Law School Library is the Langdell Library. The group of interconnected facilities, dormitories and grounds, including the library, is known as the Harkness Commons... essentially a law, and graduate study, mini-campus.
  • When the science team is forced off of the road and crashes - airbags in the modern vehicle did not deploy.

Recurring Themes

  • Mnemonic Device. Walter using improvised "Carmen" lyrics to remember H-A-R-K-N-E-S-S Library, utilizes the same mental trick/tool he used to remember the city/bank he hid the teleportation equipment (Safe) and the order of the planets in the solar system (Inner Child).

Cultural References

  • Wizard of Oz. Walter, intimidated by his recent kidnapping and drugging, wants to stay in the car, then shares that the Cowardly Lion had a point about cowardice. Peter assures him there are no Flying Monkeys where they are going.
  • Deliverance. Walter looks at the photo of the disfigured Teddy Falls and remembers the theme music from the movie Deliverance. Genetically-challenged rural folk were part of that plot too.

Music

  • Depend On Me by Graham Parker Download from iTunes
  • Freight Train Blues by Tennessee Ernie Ford Download from iTunes

Episode References

  • Walter wants to hide in the station wagon, but Peter promises him he is not in there, and that Walter won't be kidnapped again. ref: Grey Matters
